Data Energy received instruction to complete an energy review on three of the four high quality residential buildings situated around the historic football ground of Leyton Orient FC. Following our site visit we identified that the landlord’s electricity supply consumption for one of the buildings was considerably higher than that of the similar sized buildings. This warranted further investigation and it was agreed that Data Energy would return to site to inspect the issue further.

As a starting point, our engineer installed a three phase data logger onto the supply in order to measure the flow of electricity going into the meter and this enabled us to ensure that the correct consumption was being recorded. Two weeks into the survey we returned to site to download the data and the results concluded that the meter was in fact logging the correct consumption.

To ensure this issue was resolved, we completed a full site audit and undertook a detailed survey on the parts which were supplied by the landlord’s electricity. It was discovered that the car park shutter doors were open and that the lights were on constantly without any presence detected inside the car park. The PIR (presence infrared sensor) at the entrance of the car park was being triggered by passing pedestrians and switching the lights on! We subsequently removed the car park entrance PIR and restarted the data logger so we could compare before and after data.

Results of this concluded that the removal of the PIR reduced the overall consumption of the landlord’s supply. We compiled a consumption report to the client and recommended that the car park entrance required a replacement PIR with a more effective angle of motion detection and adjustable off delay time function.
